Since the 1 July 2013, Bristol has gone Gromit crazy as eighty Gromit sculptures have been 'unleashed' onto the streets of Bristol for 10 weeks over the summer period.
Each Gromit has been uniquely decorated by artists and celebrities from around the world. Rolls-Royce sponsored one of the 5ft tall Gromit’s and asked Bristol Airport to play host to him over the summer. The Rolls-Royce Gromit is called 'Bristol Bulldog' and his new home is in the main check-in area until September 2013. The design is inspired by the Bristol Aeroplane Company's aircraft which was powered by Rolls-Royce Jupiter engines. Bristol Bulldog Gromit was designed and created by graphic designer Dan Shearn with Alan Guest and Chad Woodward at Red Central agency. Dan commented: "I thought this design would bring two of Bristol's greats together in a light hearted mash up." All proceeds from the trail and from downloading the ‘Detect-O’Gromit’ app will be donated to Wallace and Gromit’s Grand Appeal, the Bristol Children’s Hospital Charity. After the 10 week trail finishes the Gromits will be auctioned to raise money for The Grand Appeal which also supports the Special Care Baby Unit at St Michael’s Hospital and is the Airport Team’s chosen charity for 2013.
Community Relations Manager Sean Connolly, Rolls-Royce said "We hope our Bristol Bulldog Gromit will give people an opportunity to connect with our city's rich aviation heritage and help to inspire the next generation of aerospace engineers.'
"Our Bristol Bulldog Gromit with our City's Aerospace heritage in mind was an obvious choice to be ‘kennelled’ for the summer at Bristol Airport - the gateway to the region. Nick Park, Aardman and the Gromit Unleashed team were very keen for our Gromit to be located there and the airport are over the moon to be looking after him for us. Please make the journey to pat our Gromit on the back if you are following the trail”.
