Folk group to perform at airport ahead of US trip

Somerset Morris, a women’s Morris dancing team based in the Bristol and Bath area, performed a traditional English dances in the check in hall at Bristol International on Monday 21st April.  The performance comes ahead of a trip to the USA on St George’s Day on 23rd April where they will be dancing at events across California.  The group, who usually dance at the George & Dragon pub in nearby Felton, are flying from Bristol International to New York and onwards with Continental Airlines.

Somerset Morris perform Cotswold Morris dances, characterized by the use of sticks or handkerchiefs.  They also perform dances using two metre staves with brass stave heads representing local villages.

The party are visiting an American group they met at the Chippenham Folk Festival, and will be appearing at a string of events culminating in a May Day performance at dawn in San Francisco.

“It’s a great way to celebrate St George’s Day,” said Wendy Venn from Somerset Morris.  “We can’t wait to show American audiences some traditional English dancing.”
