A sixteen week consultation was launched today (1 September) by Bristol International to seek the views of the local community on the airport’s Draft Noise Action Plan.
Prepared in accordance with environmental noise regulations, the Draft Noise Action Plan sets out a strategy for managing the effects of noise from aircraft operations.
The proposals set out in the Draft Noise Action Plan demonstrate Bristol International’s commitment to best practice in noise reduction and mitigation, and provide clear and measurable indicators by which the airport’s performance can be judged.
Although not directly linked to the planning application to develop the airport currently being considered by North Somerset Council, the Draft Noise Action Plan addresses concerns that future development could be accompanied by increased noise disturbance for nearby communities by demonstrating that a rigorous framework for the management and reporting of noise is in place.
Measures to manage noise from aircraft on the ground and in the air are already being implemented, including limits on the use of Auxiliary Power Units, encouraging Continuous Descent Approaches and incentivising airlines to operate quieter aircraft. Night flying is controlled by a noise quota system.
Fresh proposals include a review of stand allocation to identify opportunities to reduce the impact of noise from the aircraft parking apron, installation of fixed electrical ground power, and the introduction of a ‘Tracker’ system to record the tracks taken by aircraft arriving and departing the airport.
Alan Davies, Planning and Environment Director at Bristol International Airport, said:
“The Draft Noise Action Plan demonstrates our commitment to controlling the adverse effects or our operations and minimising their impact on the local community.
“We take consultation seriously, and are keen to hear the views of local stakeholders on this Plan.”
Under the guidance provided by Government, the Draft Noise Action Plan has been drawn up to cover the parishes of Yatton, Congresbury, Cleeve, Wrington, Backwell and Winford.
Airport management will be available to discuss the Draft Noise Action Plan at the following locations and dates:
13 October 2009 1400 to 1900 Hangstones Pavilion, Yatton
10 November 2009 1400 to 1900 Felton Village Hall, Felton
