Bristol Airport local community fund helps young imaginations take flight

Created: 21st Aug 2020

Over 280 projects supported since Fund commenced in 2012

A fund set up to support local community projects around Bristol Airport has made grants totalling more than £1 million since it started in 2012.

In 2020 the management committee which oversees the Airport Environmental Improvement Fund (known at the Local Community Fund) has granted over £58,000 to support 14 local community projects.

Each year Bristol Airport contributes a minimum of £100,000 to the Airport Environmental Improvement Fund, with the figure increasing in line with growth in passenger numbers.   The Fund’s management committee includes representatives from both the Airport and North Somerset Council and is independently chaired.

Last year a total of 88 projects were supported with contributions ranging from £500 to £10,000.  This included noise insulation grants for local residents; solar panels for Regil Village Hall; outdoor play areas in Winford; learning dog for Winford School; community theatre performances and improvements to Backwell Village Hall; and various environmental and learning projects for youth clubs and pre-schools.

The Fund’s purpose is to help mitigate the impact of the Airport’s operations and to give something back to surrounding communities who are situated in close proximity to the Airport.  Projects which could be eligible for support include initiatives to mitigate the impact of aircraft and ground noise, improvements to transport infrastructure, measures to reduce community severance, nature conservation, educational projects and local sustainability initiatives.  The Fund’s area of benefit includes the parishes of Winford, Wrington, Backwell, Brockley, Cleeve and Barrow Gurney.

Jacqui Mills, Public and Community Relations Manager, Bristol Airport said:

“We are delighted with the number and wide range of local projects supported in the communities in close proximity to the Airport since the Local Community Fund started.  The Fund has supported projects from learning dogs assisting in classrooms, solar panels and noise insulation grants, educational learning projects for local schools, speed reduction schemes, road and footway improvements which are all incredibly valuable to local residents in the area.   Bristol Airport’s Local Community Fund, management committee meet on a quarterly basis and we welcome applications from local projects and organisers from the core area of the Fund’s area of benefit including the parishes of Winford, Wrington, Backwell, Brockley, Cleeve and Barrow Gurney, details of the Fund and application form are available on Bristol Airport’s website.”

Fiona Matthews, Creative Director, Theatre Orchard said:

"We are very grateful to Bristol Airport’s Local Community Fund which has on two occasions enabled Theatre Orchard to share the joy of live performance with young people in North Somerset’s primary and secondary schools.  At a time when school resources are tight, support from the Airport has brought the magic of professional theatre into school halls, ensuring that young imaginations can still take flight and new creative horizons explored."
