How the Test to Release scheme works

From 15 December 2020, Bristol Airport customers can opt for a ‘Test to Release’ on their Passenger Locator Form (PLF) prior to travel or 48 hours before they return to the UK.

Customers will be able to book and pay for the Covid-19 PCR test via SYNLAB’s website, where they will need to register an account. To register they will complete a form entering their outbound and inbound flight and passenger details and follow the online instructions for payment. The cost of the test is £59.99 for Bristol Airport customers and £99.99 for other customers in the UK.

On payment the passenger will receive an email to confirm their test kit order and the Test reference number you require for the PLF The COVID-19 kit/s will be sent to order address the passenger has identified as their place of quarantine. The Passenger will be given a virtual appointment time to log on to the digital portal following a full five days of self-isolation. The appointment consists of an instruction to watch a video and complete the sample collection process with a virtual appointment including how to package the sample and post to SYNLAB.

Each passenger must have a completed the test, they will be guided by the video and test instructions how to complete the Test Request Form (TRF) with the correct information and how to package up the sample and simply return it to the SYNLAB laboratory using the Royal Mail Tracked 24 postal service.  The test results are sent to you via email within 24 hours of the sample reaching the lab.  If the test result is negative, then they will no longer need to quarantine. If the test result is positive, they will need to follow Government guidance and continue to self-isolate for the required length of time.

Under 18’s must have an adult on the booking to allow a test to go ahead with SYNLAB.

What type of test is it?

The Test to Release Covid-19 test must be a PCR swab. PCR testing is the most sensitive test that is currently available, able to detect active infection some days before the patient is infectious or symptomatic. It is the gold standard test; used in the NHS daily. The test offered by SYNLAB will be COVID-19 PCR Swab Test (PCR-RNA SARS-CoV-2).

PCR testing is performed in machines that cycle through different temperatures. As the process of changing temperature takes some time, the process is longer than other processes.
