Runway approach lighting consultation
In June 2025, Bristol Airport published its Master Plan to 2040 setting out a long-term vision of how the Airport will grow to meet the demand for air travel to and from our region.
Our Master Plan includes plans to make a series of improvements to the airfield, including increasing the length of the runway within the existing Airport boundary to accommodate larger aircraft to serve longer-haul destinations.
Since publishing the Master Plan we have continued to refine our design to ensure it meets all relevant safety standards set by the Civil Aviation Authority, the UK’s independent regulator for aviation.
In order for the runway to continue operating safely, in all weather conditions and with all aircraft types, we need to relocate the existing and install additional safety features at the eastern end of the runway. The runway threshold and runway aiming point (the point where pilots are expected to touch down) will need to move east by 240 metres. The relocated threshold means we need to make changes to the runway approach lighting.
Ahead of submitting a planning application for future growth we sought your views on a proposal to modify the Airport’s runway approach lighting.
Background
There is currently runway approach lighting at both the eastern and western ends of the runway meeting aeronautical standards, which plays a critical safety role helping pilots land at night and when there are low visibility conditions.
The extent of runway approach lighting is determined through engagement with the independent safety regulator, the Civil Aviation Authority, taking into account the type of instrument landing system at the Airport and aircraft operations.
Currently, at the eastern end of the runway, approach lighting is located within the boundary of the Airport and a field east of the A38 which is within the private ownership of the Airport. The distance between the existing runway threshold and the furthest existing approach light is 570 metres.
Our proposals
Environmental considerations
The following section sets out our preliminary assessment of what environmental and other impacts the proposed new runway approach lighting arrangements might have. We will include a full assessment of all relevant impacts within our forthcoming planning application but would welcome comments on this preliminary assessment. Where possible we will present information within our application to avoid, reduce, and mitigate adverse impacts, as well as identifying opportunities for environmental enhancement.
Consultation closed - Friday 19 December 2025
Thank you to everyone who shared comments and suggestions on our proposals. The consultation period is now closed.
Next Steps
Bristol Airport will consider feedback from this consultation and include it in the forthcoming planning application that will be submitted to North Somerset Council.
